Heat Warning issued for central and northeastern Newfoundland
The Environment and Climate Change Canada Weather Office in Gander has issued a Heat Warning for the following areas from today (Sunday, July 13, 2025) through Monday:
Bay of Exploits
Bonavisa North
Bonavista Peninsula
Gander and Vicinity
Green Bay - White Bay
Terra Nova
A period of hot weather is setting in across parts of northeastern Newfoundland, including the Bonavista Peninsula, from Sunday through Monday — and possibly longer.
Daytime highs will range from 29°C to 31°C on Sunday and near 30°C on Monday, with nighttime lows around 17°C. Slightly cooler conditions are expected along some coastal areas, but overall, warm and humid weather may persist into mid-week. Heat warnings may be extended as conditions evolve.
This level of heat can affect everyone’s health. Be especially mindful of older adults, people living alone, and those with chronic health conditions. Check in on them regularly — in person or by phone.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, dark urine, or extreme fatigue. If symptoms appear, stop all activity and drink water. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone has hot, red skin, confusion, or loss of consciousness, call 911 immediately and try to cool them down while waiting for help.
Stay cool by drinking water frequently, keeping blinds closed, using fans or air conditioning, and heading to cooler public places like libraries or shaded parks if needed. Avoid outdoor activities during the peak heat and wear light, breathable clothing if you must be outside.
Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked car, even for a short time.
Heat warnings are issued when temperatures and humidity create conditions that pose an elevated risk of heat-related illnesses. Stay informed and follow local public health advice as this stretch of heat continues.
