Heat Break Arrives Thursday as Cooler Air Pushes Into NL

After two days of summer heat, Mother Nature is finally easing off the gas.

A ridge of high pressure that sent temperatures soaring into the upper 20s and low 30s across Newfoundland and Labrador is beginning to slide east, opening the door for cooler air to return on Thursday.

While many communities enjoyed some of the warmest weather of the summer, the change will be noticeable by tomorrow morning. Overnight lows will fall back into the teens province-wide, making for a much more comfortable start to the day. The transition is already underway in Labrador.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed Wednesday afternoon and evening as a cold front pushed into the region. Those showers will gradually shift toward the coast overnight before cooler, drier air settles in behind the front. The rain is welcome news for western and central Labrador, where wildfire crews continue battling numerous active fires. While lightning always raises concerns about new starts, the rainfall should also help firefighters make progress on existing fires.

On the Island, Thursday stays much quieter overall—but not completely dry. Most of Newfoundland will simply notice cooler temperatures and a refreshing breeze, but eastern areas, particularly the Avalon Peninsula, have the best chance of seeing showers or even a period of steady rain during the afternoon as a weak area of low pressure tracks nearby. Exactly how much rain falls remains a bit uncertain, but you'll likely notice more cloud cover, areas of drizzle and cooler conditions than we've seen over the last couple of days.

Looking toward the weekend, the forecast remains a bit mixed. Eastern Newfoundland could see a few showers on Saturday, which may affect some outdoor events, including the annual Hickman Chevrolet Car Show. Central and western Newfoundland, however, appear to fare much better with plenty of dry weather.

Sunday trends cooler across much of the province, but conditions also improve for eastern Newfoundland before temperatures begin climbing once again early next week.

Don't expect another 30-degree day anytime soon, but summer certainly isn't over. Temperatures next week should return to the low and mid-20s for many areas, accompanied by the chance of a few passing showers.

For now, enjoy the break from the heat. After the last couple of days, many homes—and air conditioners—could probably use it.
