Frost possible tonight, and 20s are likely tomorrow!
Tonight’s Forecast
Sunshine has dominated much of Newfoundland and Labrador today, aside from coastal Labrador and eastern Newfoundland. Clouds are already breaking up, and by late afternoon many areas will see clear skies.
It will be a cooler night, with many spots dipping into the single digits. Central regions could get even colder, and a Frost Advisory is in effect for Grand Falls–Windsor and surrounding areas. Lows there may range from +1°C to +5°C. If frost forms, it will likely occur between 4 AM and sunrise, especially in low-lying spots.
Gardeners can water soil to help retain ground warmth and cover or bring in sensitive plants if possible.
In Labrador, temperatures tonight will range from 4°C to 10°C, warmest along the coast.

Tomorrow
Another brilliantly sunny day is on tap across most of Newfoundland and Labrador. Temperatures will climb into the upper teens and low 20s.
Central Newfoundland (Gander, Grand Falls–Windsor, Lumsden): near 20–21°C
Bonavista Peninsula: around 18°C
Southwest Coast (Grand Bank, Burgeo, Port aux Basques, Stephenville, Codroy): close to 20°C
Eastern Newfoundland: St. John’s around 19°C (possibly 20°C, which would mark the 82nd day this year at or above 20°C)
Labrador will also enjoy sunny skies, though cooler air will soon arrive later in the week.
Friday brings a big change as a frontal system pushes in from Quebec.
Rain: Heavy rain is expected across much of Labrador and the island, beginning in western areas Friday morning and spreading east through the day. By evening, heavy rain will cover the Avalon and southeastern Labrador. Showers may linger into Saturday morning.
Wind: Gusty winds are a major concern. Ramea/Wreckhouse could see gusts 80–100 km/h Friday morning, easing later in the day as winds shift. Eastern Newfoundland will likely see gusts 60–80 km/h Friday evening into the night. Wind warnings are possible.
The weekend itself looks better: lingering showers early Saturday, then clearing with decent conditions. Sunday will be breezy, while early next week turns cooler and more fall-like, especially for eastern areas. Labrador will cool significantly, with highs of only 9–12°C by the weekend and even the chance of flurries in western areas.
Tropics Update
Hurricane Gabriel: Now a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 175 km/h and gusts to 215 km/h. It’s moving east at 40 km/h on a very unusual track toward Spain and Portugal. It could reach southern Portugal and Spain this weekend, then move into the Mediterranean early next week.
Tropical Development:
One disturbance near Puerto Rico has a 30% chance of development in the next 48 hours, and 80% within a week.
Another system farther east is more concerning. Model guidance suggests it could become a hurricane and track toward Bermuda before turning north. Its future path will depend on how it interacts with weather systems over North America.
