Another frost advisory is in effect for parts of Newfoundland tonight, and this time the Avalon Peninsula may be one of the areas most likely to see widespread frost before sunrise Tuesday. The advisory also includes Terra Nova, Clarenville, the Bonavista Peninsula, Buchans and the interior, Deer Lake and the Humber Valley, Gros Morne, Grand Falls-Windsor and vicinity, and Green Bay–White Bay. Even outside those areas, patchy frost is possible where skies stay clear and winds remain light.
Temperatures tonight will generally fall into the 2°C to 7°C range across Newfoundland, but locally colder readings are possible. Terrain and local climate will make a big difference, especially in valleys and other sheltered spots. Badger is one place that could get close to the freezing mark again, while inland parts of the Burin Peninsula and south coast may also see some patchy frost toward daybreak.
Clouds begin increasing Tuesday, which will signal the start of our next change in the weather. Showers will begin approaching southern and southwestern Newfoundland later in the day before spreading east Tuesday night. This is tied to the same lingering nor’easter that has been spinning south of Long Island and affecting parts of the northeastern United States and the Maritimes. By the time its moisture reaches us, though, there won’t be anything particularly impressive about it.
Tuesday morning should start mostly dry across Newfoundland, although cloud cover will gradually increase. A few showers may begin showing up along the west and southwest coasts during the day, with more organized rain moving in Tuesday evening. That rain will then work from west to east overnight into early Wednesday. The Avalon could see a brief heavier shower or downpour around 5 or 6 AM Wednesday before the rain moves offshore. Conditions should improve fairly quickly after that, with some sunshine returning later Wednesday.
Beyond that, the forecast stays remarkably quiet. Thursday looks good, Friday turns a little breezier, and right now the weekend looks decent across Newfoundland, although temperatures may trend a little cooler by Sunday. There are no major storms showing up in the forecast at this point.
Labrador has an even quieter forecast. Sunshine and comfortable temperatures are expected Tuesday, with very little weather of consequence through much of the week. A few showers may arrive later in the week and winds could pick up somewhat, but otherwise the Big Land remains quiet through the weekend and into early next week.
So the main thing to watch tonight is the frost. After that, clouds increase Tuesday and a relatively weak round of rain crosses Newfoundland Tuesday night into early Wednesday before another stretch of quieter weather settles in.
