December Thaw Continues Into Saturday Along With High Winds, Rain And Snow
Unseasonably mild air is pushing across Newfoundland and Labrador tonight as a strong weather system moves through the region. While temperatures are well above normal for December, conditions will turn messy and, in some areas, dangerous.

Across Newfoundland, rain will spread overnight and continue into Saturday, at times heavy on the south coast. Strong winds will also be an issue, especially in western and coastal areas, where gusts could reach 90 to 120 km/h in exposed locations. Conditions will begin to improve later Saturday as the rain moves offshore, setting up a cooler and less windy Sunday.
In Labrador, the main concern is a flash freeze late tonight into early Saturday. Temperatures around Labrador City, Wabush, and Churchill Falls will fall rapidly—from above freezing to well below zero in just a few hours. Roads and walkways could quickly turn icy. Snow and blowing snow are also expected, particularly in coastal and northern areas.
Rainfall amounts will vary significantly. Southern Newfoundland and parts of southern Labrador could see 25 to 50 mm, while much of eastern and central Newfoundland will receive considerably less.
After a brief break Sunday, unsettled weather returns early next week. There is growing potential for snow around Christmas, especially in eastern and central Newfoundland.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and alerts, particularly in areas affected by flash freezing, heavy rain, and strong winds.
