Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture, Newfoundland and Labrador issued an update on the wildfires at 12:30 PM this afternoon via their Facebook page. Below is the post, in its entirety.

THE KINGSTON FIRE

The Kingston fire is estimated at 9,127 ha. Water bombers and a S61 heavy-capacity helicopter conducted aerial suppression yesterday when conditions allowed, and water bombers are on site this morning. Water bomber missions will continue on the northern and northwestern edges; however, it is very smoky in the area, which may affect where they can work safely.

Military support will be working on the ground in the Adam’s Cove area putting out hot spots. Volunteer fire departments will be assisting with efforts to work on structure protection in Northern Bay as long as it’s safe to do so. A helicopter will provide safety overwatch of the fire while they work.

THE PADDY’S POND FIRE

There is no change in size of the wildfire at Paddy’s Pond, which is still estimated at 306 ha with smoky conditions and hot spots. Helicopters continue bucketing this morning and ground crews continue working on fire guard construction with help from the Canadian Armed Forces.

THE MARTIN LAKE FIRE

The fire near Martin Lake is still approximately 2,160 ha with no growth reported overnight. Smoke and excessive heat in the area made it difficult for ground crews to work yesterday. Crews plan to work the north side of the lake today to spray cabins and check structures in the Rushy Pond area. The fire received rain this morning, which will greatly help suppression efforts. Aerial resources and ground crews continue to work on the fire. Route 360 (Bay d’Espoir Highway) remains closed at this time.
