Bitter Cold in Labrador — Some Improvement Ahead
Temperatures in western Labrador fell below −40°C overnight, the coldest reading since 2024. While tonight won’t be quite as extreme, much of Labrador remains locked in deep cold, with overnight lows near −30°C in the west and daytime highs generally in the −10s to −20s. Sunshine dominates most areas, though breezy conditions persist.
Snow Arrives in Newfoundland This Evening
Snow has begun moving into Newfoundland this afternoon and evening, first affecting the southwest and gradually spreading eastward overnight. This system will make travel tricky in spots, especially during the evening and overnight hours.
A key detail:
Eastern Newfoundland (Avalon + Burin Peninsula) will see snow flip to rain later this evening, helping keep totals lower
Central and western areas stay mostly snow, with fluffier snow likely this evening
By late evening and overnight, most of the precipitation winds down, leaving lingering flurries Friday morning.
Expected Snowfall Totals (Noon to Noon)
Most areas: 5–10 cm
Central Newfoundland: Localized 5–10 cm from near Clarenville through Gander to Grand Falls-Windsor
Western Newfoundland & Northern Peninsula: Similar totals, locally higher
South Coast: Isolated pockets could exceed 10 cm before snow tapers off
Looking Ahead: Colder Air & Uncertain Snow Chances
Friday brings near-freezing temperatures for parts of eastern Newfoundland — brief and short-lived. Colder air moves in behind this system, with much colder conditions by the weekend, especially on the Northern Peninsula, where highs Sunday may stay near −17°C.
There are small-scale disturbances that could bring additional snow:
Friday night into early Saturday and again Saturday afternoon for eastern Newfoundland
Potential for a few cm — or more if features align just right
These setups are notoriously hard to pin down, so confidence remains low. This will be watched closely.
Big U.S. Storm — Why It Matters Here
A major winter storm is expected across the northeastern U.S. this weekend, with very heavy snow from Washington, DC to Boston. Some guidance suggests totals approaching 60 cm in parts of New England.
What matters for us:
Depending on its eventual track, this system could impact Atlantic Canada Monday into Tuesday
Right now, confidence is higher for the Maritimes than Newfoundland
Newfoundland’s outcome depends heavily on storm track — snowy vs. mostly missing us
At this point, there’s roughly a 50–70% chance of snow and/or wind Tuesday across parts of Newfoundland.
