Chilly, Windy, and a Touch of Snow: Your Weekend Forecast for Newfoundland & Labrador
Today’s forecast highlights:
An area of low pressure passes southeast of the Avalon on Saturday. This will bring a little snow to the east coast of the Avalon and the Metro area from late tonight into Saturday evening.
Snowfall amounts will generally be 5 cm or less.
Wind speeds pick up Saturday, and gust as high as 80 km/h on the Avalon. Lighter speeds return Sunday.
Snow moves into Labrador’s mid and north coast Saturday and continues into Sunday. Amounts will be around 15 cm, with locally higher amounts possible
A stalled low in the North Atlantic will bring rain and snow to much of the Province between later Monday and Wednesday.

🌡️ Tonight: Coldest in the West
Overnight temperatures will drop to:
Near −30°C in western Labrador
Minus teens across much of the Island
Slightly milder (but still cold) in eastern Newfoundland, with lows in the minus single digits.
Cloud cover increases overnight, and a bit of snow will begin edging toward the Avalon, lingering into Saturday.
🌨️ Saturday: Snow for the Avalon, Wind for Everyone
Saturday’s forecast isn’t entirely straightforward due to a low-pressure system tracking southeast of the Avalon.
Avalon & Southern Shore
Snow develops overnight and into Saturday morning
Most areas: trace to 2 cm
Southern Shore (Petty Harbour to Trepassey, east of Cape Pine): up to 5 cm of fluffy snow
Metro St. John’s and areas north: generally 1–3 cm
Elsewhere on the Island
Mostly cloudy west of the Avalon
Temperatures around −3 to −4°C
Sunnier and slightly colder on the Northern Peninsula
💨 Strong Winds Saturday
As the low passes by:
Metro Avalon gusts: up to 80 km/h by midday
Exposed coastal areas may exceed 70 km/h
Winds ease Saturday evening and continue diminishing into Sunday
❄️ Labrador: Snow Along the Coast
Snow develops along the Labrador coast Saturday and pushes west overnight.
Makkovik → Hopedale → Nain:
10–15 cm of wetter snow by Sunday eveningSnowfall drops off quickly farther inland
This marks the start of a more unsettled, snowy pattern for coastal Labrador.
🌡️ Looking Ahead: Warmer, Unsettled Next Week
An area of low pressure stalling south of Greenland will draw in milder maritime air.
What that means:
Coastal areas trend near or above 0°C
Periods of wet snow, rain, or mixed precipitation
Monday–Wednesday: sloppy snow for parts of coastal Labrador and Newfoundland
Inland and higher elevations (including parts of the Long Range Mountains) could see more significant snow, though placement is still uncertain
For eastern Newfoundland and much of the Island, highs near +1°C are expected next week — noticeably milder than recent
