Beautiful Thursday Before Rain Chances Increase — Then a Cooler Pattern Takes Hold

We’re heading into October on a pretty nice note across Newfoundland and Labrador, but there are signs of a change developing as we get closer to the weekend.
Tonight will be quiet across Newfoundland, with lows generally between 5°C and 10°C. Labrador will see more cloud along with some showers and pockets of rain, but temperatures will remain relatively mild.
Thursday looks like the standout day. Most of Newfoundland will see a very nice day with highs in the upper teens and potentially the lower 20s in a few spots. Labrador will also be mild, with temperatures in the mid to upper teens and Happy Valley-Goose Bay potentially reaching around 19°C. The first signs of change begin showing up later Thursday as showers move into Labrador West. There may even be a few thundershowers as that moisture starts working east.
By Friday, southwest winds will increase across Newfoundland. That flow will also become more humid, which means fog will become more likely along south-facing coastlines. Rain should begin moving into western and southwestern Newfoundland later Friday before spreading east and northeast Friday night into Saturday morning.
An interesting part of this setup is where some of that moisture came from. The plume moving across eastern Canada was once associated with Hurricane Polo, which made landfall along the Pacific coast of Mexico earlier this week. That does not mean a tropical system is coming to Newfoundland, but some of its leftover moisture has been carried north and east through the atmosphere and will eventually become part of our weekend weather.
As things stand now, the rain should move through relatively quickly. Eastern Newfoundland may see showers or rain during the first part of Saturday before conditions begin improving behind it.
The bigger change comes with the temperature. Colder air currently over Labrador, Quebec and Ontario will begin sinking south through the weekend. Labrador feels that change first, with Labrador West dropping to around 6°C Saturday and the possibility of a few showers or flurries.
That cooler pattern becomes more established next week. Happy Valley-Goose Bay goes from around 19°C Thursday to highs near 9°C by Tuesday and Wednesday. Newfoundland will hold onto the milder air a little longer, with upper teens possible through Saturday, but temperatures will also begin trending downward as we move into next week.
September gave us plenty of mild weather. As October begins, the forecast is finally starting to look and feel a little more like fall.
