A Cold Week Ahead With Snow On the Docket for Wednesday
Tonight
Overnight lows fall into the -20s to near -30 in Labrador, and -9 to -18 across the Island. Wind chills won’t be quite as harsh as earlier today, but Lab West could still flirt with -40 again. On the Island, expect wind chills in the minus teens to near -30 by morning.
Tuesday
A few flurries along the West Coast, highs -4 to -7 on the Island and -8 to -12 in Labrador. Wind chills ease somewhat during the day for some areas, but it won’t last. Much colder air pushes back in for Thursday and Friday, with highs dropping back into the minus teens and minus 20s in Labrador.
Snow Squalls Developing
Onshore flurries and snow squalls continue along the West Coast and will become more widespread tonight into midday Tuesday. A Snow Squall Watch is in effect for much of western Newfoundland, including the Bay of Islands, southwest coast, and southeast Avalon. Outside of squall bands, snowfall will be minimal. But under a persistent band, totals can add up quickly. These will be localized — not widespread — but travel conditions can deteriorate in a hurry where they set up.
Wednesday System
Another low moves in Wednesday. Snow spreads across much of the Island after 6–7 AM. By midday, light to moderate snow is likely across the south coast, Burin Peninsula, Avalon Peninsula, central areas, and toward the west coast. This is not a major storm — think nuisance system.
Burin Peninsula: 5–15 cm for most areas
Avalon (including metro): 2–10 cm, depending on how quickly snow changes to rain
South Coast high terrain (Burgeo, Ramea, Port aux Basques area): Around 10 cm during the first half of Wednesday
Southern Avalon areas (south of St. Bride’s toward Cape Pine and Cape Race) may see little accumulation as snow flips to rain fairly quickly. By Wednesday evening, things begin to wind down.
Beyond That
Once we’re through midweek, the pattern looks fairly quiet. No major systems on the horizon. A warm-up is possible this weekend with a chance of snow, and early next week may even bring a bit of a thaw. In Labrador, temperatures rebound next weekend, and parts of the northeast may see highs near or even above freezing by mid-next week.
For now, bundle up.
The cold is real, the squalls will be localized but impactful, and Wednesday brings another round of shovel-worthy snow for some.
