A Beautiful Saturday Before Heat and Humidity Return

After a muggy Friday in parts of Newfoundland, much more comfortable air is settling in for the start of the weekend.

The humidity will continue to get pushed away from eastern Newfoundland Friday night, making for a much more comfortable overnight period across most of the province. There may still be a few showers around early, but for most areas it will be the kind of night where opening the windows and letting some cooler air into the house sounds pretty good.

Saturday is shaping up to be one of the nicer days we've had in a while across Newfoundland. Expect plenty of sunshine with highs generally in the upper teens to lower 20s. Labrador will also see a decent day overall, although it will be cooler along the north coast. Temperatures are expected to reach around 22°C in Mary's Harbour, with upper teens to near 20°C around Churchill Falls and Labrador City.

Saturday also marks a seasonal milestone in St. John's. The sunset will be at or after 8 PM for the final time in 2026. After August 22, the next sunset at 8 PM or later won't happen until April 22, 2027. Farther west, the later sunsets hang on a little longer — Corner Brook won't see its final post-8 PM sunset until September 2.

The weather begins to change again Sunday.

Most of Newfoundland will still see temperatures in the lower 20s, but showers will begin working into southern and southwestern parts of the Island as high pressure sets up offshore and a low approaches from the southwest. That setup will create a strong southerly flow, pulling increasingly warm and humid air northward.

By late Sunday, rain and showers are expected from Burgeo through Port aux Basques and north toward Bay St. George, with some activity potentially reaching areas just south of Corner Brook. If you're travelling through Nova Scotia or New Brunswick Sunday, showers will also be possible there.

The bigger story comes early next week.

Humidity will climb quickly Sunday night into Monday, especially across western, southern and southwestern Newfoundland. Dew points could approach the upper teens or even near 20°C by Monday, which is firmly into muggy territory.

Temperatures should also rise. Monday looks warm, with some sunshine possible away from fog and scattered showers. By Tuesday and especially Wednesday, temperatures are expected to climb well into the 20s in many areas. Some guidance is even suggesting upper 20s, and with the added humidity, humidex values could reach the upper 20s to middle 30s in some parts of the province.

Southern-facing shorelines will likely be the exception at times, where onshore flow may bring fog and cooler conditions.

Labrador will also warm up, particularly around Happy Valley-Goose Bay where Sunday could reach about 26°C. Showers become more likely Monday and Tuesday, with a risk of showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday.

So enjoy Saturday. It looks sunny, comfortable and pleasantly warm across most of the province. By late Sunday and Monday, the humidity begins its return, setting the stage for another stretch of very summer-like weather next week.
