Wednesday Morning Update — January 28, 2026

NL's forecast for today, January 28, 2026

Good Wednesday morning!

It is cold again this morning, and snow continues in many areas! Here are today’s weather highlights:

  • Snow continues to fly over much of the Island this morning, although it is ending in the east.

  • Areas of blowing snow are found over many areas as well, due to to winds gusting 60 to 80 km/h in some areas.

  • Another area of snow will be found over much of Labrador and Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula, Green Bay - White Bay, and parts of central (near the coast).

  • Winter Weather alerts are in effect for parts of Labrador and Newfoundland.

  • Many schools will have delays and/or closures across the Province this morning.

  • Temperatures will reach the mid single digits below freezing for highs across Newfoundland today, while coastal Labrador gets to near 0ºC, and the west will be closer to -20ºC.

The morning radar loop shows that we are still dealing with areas of snow across much of Newfoundland this morning as one system departs and a long-duration snowy pattern sets up shop in parts of Labrador, the Northern Peninsula, and even parts of central Newfoundland.

Roads across the Province are reported as snow-covered, with reduced visibility, and in some areas, such as the Heart’s Content Barrens and around the northeast coast, travel is not advised. Check 511NL.ca for the latest road info. The image below were the travel conditions as of 5:56 AM NST.

Newfoundland road report from 511NL.ca as of just before 6 AM.

Today will see the weather improving, slowly, in the east and south, while areas of central (near the coast) parts of the west coast, the Northern Peninsula and much of Labrador see snowfall. In some areas, the snow will be significant, especially on the Northern Peninsula and the Green Bay - White Bay area. Future radar shows that very well.

And this is just the start of a multi-day snowfall event for areas outlined above. Snowfall will be very heavy in some areas by the time this eases later Friday or Saturday. I will get into more details on this later today. In the meantime, I’ve got to go clear my snow so my better half can get to work and my kids to school!

I’ll have my next update on this week’s weather later today!
